Patients’ Aid following Jinnah’s Legacy Enabling Healthcare, Serving Humanity
Every year on the 25th of December, Pakistan celebrates the birth anniversary of its founding father, the legendary Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whose leadership and vision made our independence possible. This day provides an opportunity not only to reflect on his legacy but also to honor the institutions that carry his name and embody his principles. One such institution is the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), commonly known as Jinnah Hospital, located in the heart of Karachi. This hospital, inspired and named after Quaid-e-Azam, continues to carry forward his vision of serving humanity and easing the suffering of those in need.
Since Pakistan’s independence 77 years ago, Karachi has become a symbol of resilience and unity. Despite facing numerous challenges daily, this bustling metropolis has consistently welcomed people from diverse backgrounds, providing them with a sense of belonging and safety.
Jinnah Hospital, A Tribute to Quaid-e-Azam
The journey of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) began in 1930 as the Medical Corps Hospital, which was established to provide medical aid exclusively to military personnel. In 1942, the hospital was renamed the British General Hospital and continued to serve until 1947, operating as a 100-bed facility with basic medical services.
In 1947, following the creation of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was requested to lend his name to the hospital. He graciously agreed, but only on the condition that it be made available to the public. As a result, the British General Hospital was renamed Jinnah Central Hospital (JCH), marking the beginning of its transformation into a public healthcare facility. At that time, Karachi, as the capital city of Pakistan, was home to thousands of federal government employees and their families. Recognizing the need for a well-equipped healthcare facility, the government decided to establish JCH to serve the growing population, as the existing Civil Hospital was insufficient to meet the demand.
Jinnah Central Hospital, later known as the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, was founded with the noble vision of providing high-quality healthcare services, particularly to the underprivileged. Named in honor of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the hospital embodies his values of service, compassion, and nation-building. Just as Jinnah dedicated his life to alleviating the suffering of his people and securing a prosperous, independent nation, JPMC continues his legacy by offering free medical care to all, regardless of background. Today, Jinnah Hospital stands as a symbol of hope and compassion, providing vital treatment and medicine to those in need and serving the people with unwavering commitment.
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah once said,
“With faith, discipline, and selfless devotion to duty, there is nothing worthwhile that you cannot achieve.”
This powerful quote reflects the values that grounded his leadership, faith, integrity, and a deep commitment to the welfare of others. Just as Jinnah envisioned a nation built on justice and equality, these principles resonate strongly in healthcare, where selfless devotion to service and the well-being of others remains at the heart of every effort. His leadership reminds us that by staying true to these values, we can build a healthier, more compassionate society for all.

The non-profit foundation collects donations to cover medical procedures and provides support for massive infrastructure, advanced machinery & equipment, trained staff, free medicines, emergency care, and other vital services. This initiative is a true reflection of the spirit of selfless service that Quaid-e-Azam instilled in the nation.

It remains a place where the people of Karachi and beyond find ease in the face of adversity, where their healthcare needs are met with dignity and care.
As we celebrate Quaid-e-Azam’s birthday, it is important to reflect on the immense contributions he made to the creation of Pakistan and how Jinnah Hospital continues to bring his vision to life.
