Patients’ Aid revamped Obstetrics & Gynea Ward at Jinnah Hospital, Karachi

In these unprecedented times of economic crisis the entire population of Pakistan is facing significant challenges, particularly women, who often have the last call on family resources for their healthcare. The rising population of Pakistan exacerbates these challenges, especially for women, posing significant threats to their health and well-being, as well as the upbringing of their children. This World Population Day, we spotlight the positive roles that Patients’ Aid-JPMC is playing in addressing and overcoming these crucial challenges, paving the way for a prosperous and healthier nation.

Pakistan’s population has reached approximately 245 million (World Population Review) (Nations Geo | Population) (Statistics Times), with a troubling poverty rate of 40% based on World Bank data. In Pakistan 1 out of 89 women die during childbirth whereas 1 in every 22 babies born dies within a month only due to unaffordability or access to a decent medical facility. This makes Pakistan a country with one of the highest maternal and newborn mortality rates in the world.

In Pakistan, cultural norms such as early marriage and inadequate awareness about family planning, hinders women’s access to healthcare and their ability to make informed decisions affecting their maternal health and placing financial burdens on families. Family planning is a pivotal aspect of managing Pakistan’s population growth. It encompasses the essential information, resources, and methods that empower individuals to decide when, whether, and how many children to have. Shockingly, one in five women in Pakistan expresses a desire to use contraceptives but lacks access to them, contributing to the country’s high rate of unsafe abortions, which account for approximately 10% of global cases annually (UNFPA Pakistan, 2018).

To address this challenge the Patients’ Aid revamped the Obstetrics & Gynae ward at JPMC that houses a Family Planning department diligently working with a team of professionals to uphold this humanitarian initiative and serve the underprivileged community.

JPMC plays a crucial role in promoting family planning through structured services, supported by professionally skilled doctors and staff, and robust support mechanisms. Across its outpatient department (OPD), wards, and labour rooms, the hospital offers a variety of contraceptive methods including intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs), Jadelle implants, pills, injectables, and condoms. By facilitating access to these services, JPMC empowers couples to make informed decisions about family planning, ensuring that each pregnancy is planned and welcomed. This approach not only enhances maternal health outcomes but also fosters healthier families and communities overall.

The hospital actively contributes to national family planning initiatives by regularly providing data to the Population Welfare Department (PWD), ensuring alignment and maximizing impact on community health and well-being. This comprehensive service is bolstered by dedicated staff trained by Vital Pakistan and supported with essential commodities from the PWD.
