Patients’ Aid-JPMC Fighting Breast Cancer!
Through Early Detection, Awareness & Treatment
Breast Cancer is a pressing issue in Pakistan, with approximately 83,000 new cases diagnosed annually, translating to around 220 women each day. Alarmingly, nearly 40,000 women die from this disease each year, often due to late-stage diagnoses. Cultural stigmas, economic challenges, and limited healthcare access contribute significantly to this tragic reality, with around 89% of diagnoses occurring at advanced stages. Patients’ Aid Foundation recognises this crucial issue and is dedicated to providing accessible care and raising awareness to combat breast cancer, ensuring that women receive the timely support and treatment they need.
The Importance of Early Detection
The positive aspect is that early detection can be life-saving. Studies indicate that around 80% of women diagnosed with stage I breast cancer live for five years or longer. By recognizing the symptoms early and engaging in proactive screening, survival rates can improve dramatically. Increasing awareness and education about these symptoms empowers women to seek timely medical attention.
Breast Cancer symptoms and signs
- A firm lump or swelling in the breast or underarm
- Changes in breast shape or size
- Skin alterations, such as dimpling or redness
- Unusual nipple discharge
- Persistent pain in the breast area
Steps for early detection
- Self-exams: Regularly self examining your breast can help notice any unusual changes. Here’s how to conduct one: Choose a consistent time each month, inspect your breasts in the mirror for any changes, lie down and use your fingers to check for lumps, apply varying pressures, and squeeze each nipple to check for any discharge.
- Clinical examinations: Consult healthcare professionals at JPMC for regular check-ups, especially if you notice changes in your breasts.
- Mammograms: Women over 40 should prioritise mammograms, which can detect abnormalities before they are felt. Patients’ Aid offers free mammograms to support women in their battles against breast cancer.
By following these steps and staying informed, women can enhance their chances of early detection and improve their overall outcomes.
The role of Patients’ Aid Foundation In breaking down barriers
Patients’ Aid Foundation, accredited by the Pakistan Center of Philanthropy, has been committed to enhancing the lives of underprivileged communities since 1990. With 1 in 9 women in Pakistan at risk of dying from breast cancer, the foundation plays a crucial role at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Recognizing the urgent need for awareness on this critical issue, Patients’ Aid is dedicated to providing accessible care and support for women battling breast cancer who lack the means for treatment.
Every October, Patients’ Aid celebrates its Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, educating the public about prevention and early detection. Through informative sessions, social media outreach, and collaboration with corporate sectors, we strive to dismantle the stigma surrounding breast cancer and promote a culture of proactive health management.
