The Spirit of Muharram: Patients’ Aid Saving Lives at JPMC

The month of Muharram marks as the beginning of Muslim New Year, providing us with yet another opportunity to resolve  to care for our less fortunate brethren in  our community. In Pakistan, the challenges that the underprivileged face includes affordability and access to quality healthcare. This is where non-profit organisations like the Patients’ Aid work to brighten up lives through making advanced healthcare accessible for all irrespective of affordability.

The month of Muharram is also known as Muharram-ul-Haram, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) referred to it as ‘the Sacred Month of Allah’. This period inspires us to embody the values of compassion and charity

The Sanctity of Muharram

In the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36), it is mentioned that Muharram is a highly sacred month and is one of the four sacred months.

During this time, Muslims are encouraged to increase their prayers, engage in acts of charity, and abstain from activities like warfare and violence. Muharram is also notable for the day of Ashura, which commemorates significant events such as the shahadat of Imam Hussain (RA) at the Battle of Karbala. This period is marked by deep reflection, remembrance, and acts of immense kindness.

One of the key aspects of Muharram is the emphasis on sadqa and helping those in need. It is a time when Muslims are particularly encouraged and inclined to make donations, support humanitarian efforts, and engage in community service.

One of the most significant ways to embody the spirit of Muharram is through the act of daily sadqa & khairaat which you can now easily schedule with a new program of Patients’ Aid , patientsaidjpmc.org/karachi-k-dost-jinnah-kay-saath/.
